Serene Arena - Senior Graphic Designer

Hailing from Metro Detroit, Serene graduated from the University of Michigan in 2003 with a BFA/BGS and an interest in serving the greater good. She worked with local/regional businesses and non-profits in Michigan before joining MSHC to build eye-catching branding and collateral for our clients.

Carmen Barboza - Administrative Coordinator

Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Carmen holds a BA in Sociology from The George Washington University. As an Intern in our tech department, she proved to be an IT whiz. Now working full-time at MSHC, Carmen offers vital IT support and HR assistance, as well as scheduling for our senior partners.

John Bavoso - Writer/Editor

John joined MSHC Partners this past June as a writer and editor in our Creative department. After graduating from the College of William and Mary in 2007 with a degree in English and Government, John moved to DC to complete a Master’s in International Politics at American University. He has written for a number of publications on topics ranging from international affairs to celebrity gossip.

Damir Brajdic - Creative Director

Damir comes to MSHC with extensive brand experience and a desire to help bring a new perspective to the political advertising arena. Born in Croatia, Damir moved to his grandfather's home in the 8 Mile section of Detroit, Michigan as a young boy. While he unfortunately never got to meet Eminem, he did go on to become Art Director at JWT, Detroit. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Damir moved back to Europe and worked as a Creative Director for clients such as FIAT, Coke, Sony, GM, Heineken Group, CitiBank, P&G, Unilever, Nestle, MasterCard, and others. He has won numerous awards and honors for his work with these clients and eagerly brings this diverse body of work experiences with him to MSHC Partners.

BiL Castine - IT Manager

Originally from Florida, BiL first joined MSHC Partners during the 2002 election cycle managing our in house pre-flight operations. Today, BiL plays a vital role in keeping MSHC running smoothly. As IT Manager, he’s responsible for making sure MSHC employees have all the technology and support they need to get the job done.

Liz Dunne - Account Executive

In her tenure at MSHC, Liz has worked extensively with our institutional clients, synthesizing polling data, research and other field information to develop and execute messaging at the national and local levels. A native of Chicago, Liz holds a bachelor’s degree in Marketing from The University of Wisconsin at Madison. Prior to joining MSHC, Liz headed up lobbying efforts and public affairs for a small DC government relations firm.

Melissa Gallant - Vice President, Creative Services

A graduate of the University of Oklahoma, Melissa relocated to Washington, D.C. after a successful career with one of Oklahoma City’s leading agencies. She’s won numerous national awards in both general and political advertising. Melissa is responsible for taking a client strategy and bringing it to life creatively.

Sarah Giordano - Partner

Some people have a gift for organization and making things happen. Sarah Giordano is one of those people. As MSHC Production Director and a partner in the firm, she is the all-important connection between a layout that exists only on a computer screen and a fully realized printed piece.

Sarah is an integral part of the creative process, helping Creative, Art and Client Services bring ideas into reality and discover what’s new and possible on the printed page. She’s also the final word at MSHC when it comes to critical questions of size, format and United States Postal Service regulations.

During non-election cycle months, Sarah resides in Syracuse, NY with her husband and two children.

Amy Niles Gonzalez - President

A veteran management consultant, entrepreneur and interactive strategist, Amy is responsible for managing MSHC Partners overall. Amy also leads our digital marketing division. Prior to joining MSHC, she was Vice President of Internet Marketing at Capital One and a Project Leader with The Boston Consulting Group.

Life has taken her up and down the East Coast. Born in Massachusetts and raised in upstate New York, Amy holds a BA in History from the University of Pennsylvania and a MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management. She now resides in Arlington, Virginia with her husband and two children.

Mark Grayer - Vice President, Direct Marketing

Mark joined MSHC after 15 years in direct-to-consumer marketing and strategy. He built innovative marketing, CRM, and e-commerce programs for major brands including Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, America Online, and National Geographic Society. A native of New Jersey, Mark graduated from the University of Delaware and holds an MBA from Drexel University. Here at MSHC, he helps our clients run their campaigns at the forefront of voter contact.

Beth Hernandez - Vice President

Beth is head of our Texas office, and holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and Public Relations from Southern Methodist University. Beth has been working in the field of direct mail since 2000, though she did take a leave of absence in 2003 to manage a successful state legislative campaign. Prior to entering the field of direct mail, Beth worked in public and government affairs for Head Start of Greater Dallas, for a boutique public relations firm in Dallas, and as Press Secretary for a Congressional re-election campaign.

Christine Hopkinson - Administration Director

Christine is originally from Rockville, Maryland. She holds a BA in Management from Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania and studied abroad in Australia. As Administration Director, she’s responsible for general office administration in addition to all HR functions. Prior to joining MSHC, Christine worked in business development for several organizations including Zipcar and The Wall Street Journal.

Trish Hoppey - Partner

Trish Hoppey joined the firm as MSHC's third partner in 2000. Coming from the world of strategic communications and media relations, with some grassroots organizing thrown in for good measure, Trish brought business savvy and invaluable experience working with institutional clients to the group.

A native New Yorker, Trish brought that take-charge New York attitude with her. It has certainly come in handy, as she works with many progressive political organizations and several high-profile statewide candidates. Among her clients are the AFL-CIO, the Sierra Club, EMILY'S List, Defenders of Wildlife, as well as Governors Jennifer Granholm, Christine Gregoire and Tom Vilsack.

Before joining MSHC, Trish worked with a wide range of organizations including the Democratic National Committee, the AFL-CIO Working Women's Department, John Sweeney's campaign for AFL-CIO President, the White House and the US Departments of Labor, Housing and Urban Development, and Agriculture. Before joining the firm, Trish served as a consultant at Greer Margolis Mitchell Burns & Associates and an Associate at the Sawyer Miller Group. Trish holds a BA in Psychology and Economics from Hofstra University.

Katherine Larsen - Account Manager

Katherine joined MSHC Partners for the first time in 2007 and has returned this year as an Account Representative working primarily with our State Strategies program. She has extensive experience with politics on a number of levels, having done fieldwork, issue organizing and campaign management while working for various leaders and organizations in Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa and Virginia. A native New Yorker, Katherine graduated from the University of Virginia with a BA in Biology and a minor in Politics.

Natalie LeBlanc - Vice President

A native Californian, Natalie has recently moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area to help lead MSHC’s California efforts. Natalie has worked all over California, serving as political director for NARAL Pro-Choice California, working as a senior account executive for Terris, Barnes & Walters and running on-the-ground field efforts with various campaigns throughout the state. Natalie is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, where she majored in English and Political Science. She and her husband Wes live in Albany with their two cats, Maggie and Miso.

Roman Levit - Senior Account Executive

Roman joined our Client Services staff in early 2010 and brings with him campaign experience that spans the country, from Minnesota and Iowa to North Carolina, Virginia and Georgia, most recently managing a campaign for Mayor of Atlanta. As part of his experience helping to get Democrats elected since 1994, he's worked as the Chief of Staff and Campaign Manager for Congressman John Barrow and served as the Deputy Director of Development of AIPAC. Born in the former Soviet Union and raised in Minneapolis, Roman graduated from St. Cloud State University with a BA in Political Science.

Dean Levitan - Partner

Dean managed campaigns for almost 10 years from the Midwest to the Deep South and the Southwest. He served as the National Field Press Secretary for Bill Bradley's presidential campaign and served as manager and spokesman for a mayoral candidate in his hometown of Philadelphia. As Managing Director of our State Strategies division, Dean ensures that Statehouse and Senate campaigns receive top-level strategic advice and creative mail.

Hal Malchow - Chairman

Hal Malchow is one of the pioneers in persuasion mail marketing. An ex-lawyer who tired of a life spent reading nothing but fine print, Hal's creative work has won numerous awards from the International Direct Marketing Association, the Direct Marketing Association of Washington and the American Association of Political Consultants. In the area of targeting, Hal pioneered the application of statistical modeling and data mining techniques in the political arena. These developments are described in his book, Political Targeting, now in its third printing.

In 2005, Hal received the Sisk Award for pioneering vision that has shaped the direct marketing industry. The last two recipients were the marketing director at NIKE and the National Geographic Society.

Before entering the direct mail business in 1985, he managed four major campaigns, including the first Senate campaign of Al Gore. Hal holds a law degree from the University of the Pacific where he was named outstanding graduate of his class.

He and his family live in Arlington, Virginia. If you're looking for him there, however, Hal's wife says that you can usually find him - regardless of the weather - outside tending to the needs of his garden.

Josh McConaha - Senior Interactive Account Executive

A native of Dover, Ohio and graduate of American University, Josh has previously overseen online fundraising, organizing, marketing and communications as Internet Director for the Democratic National Committee. He has also worked with EMILY's List and National Public Radio. At MSHC, Josh works with clients to develop new and innovative interactive strategies.

Rodd McLeod - Vice President

Rodd McLeod, a Vice President with our firm, brings extensive experience in message and strategy to political campaigns. A native New Yorker, Rodd has a background in campaign management, field organizing, message discipline and debate preparation. He has managed campaigns to victory in Democratic primaries and general elections in Arizona, Manhattan and the Bronx, and worked on progressive campaigns across ten states in races for Congress, President, Judge, District Attorney and State Senate. As Regional Political Director at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Rodd helped Democrats pick up a net 24 U.S. House seats in 2008.

Dan Miller - Data Analyst

Originally from Chicago, Dan Miller has been a political junkie since a high school trip to Washington. After studying political science at American University, he worked at the Democratic National Committee and the Feldman Group as a pollster, before joining MSHC's targeting department as a data analyst.

Jason Miller - Senior Account Executive

In his four years at MSHC, Jason has managed our work for dozens of our successful clients. Prior to joining the firm, Jason worked on numerous political campaigns across the country, including Bob Graham for President in Sioux City, IA; Blair Hull for U.S. Senate in Illinois; America Coming Together in Albuquerque, NM; and the NM Democratic Coordinated campaign. He holds a master’s in Political Management from The George Washington University.

Emily Parcell - Senior Account Executive

Emily came to MSHC after serving as the Iowa Caucus Political Director and Indiana State Director for President Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. She previously built a legislative caucus operation that regained control of the Iowa Senate for Democrats in 2006. At MSHC, Emily provides well-rounded strategic guidance to our State Strategies clients. She is a native of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and holds a degree in History from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.

Nick Rivers - Interactive Designer

Born and raised in Baltimore, Nick Rivers received a BA from Stevenson University with a major in Visual Communication. Nick designed his first Web site at the age of 13, and has since worked for several firms in Maryland. As a Junior Interactive Designer, Nick is responsible for creating innovative Interactive projects.

Joel Rivlin - Director of Analytics

Originally from Leeds, England, Joel is a veteran of campaigns in the U.S. and England. He received his statistical training at Oxford University and in the PhD program at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Prior to joining MSHC, Joel served as the Deputy Director of the UW Advertising Project where he tracked and analyzed political advertising around the United States, and was cited widely by academics, as well as national and international media outlets. Joel works with clients to integrate a variety of data-driven strategies into their programs, including microtargeting models and experiments.

Bill Russell - Director of Targeting Services

A native of St. Louis and a eighteen-year veteran of Democratic politics, Bill has spent nine years in the voter-file business. He’s also managed statewide, congressional, legislative and local campaigns and field programs in eleven states. At MSHC, Bill brings his voter-file and campaign expertise to helping our clients get the most from their data and mail programs.

John Salisbury - Deputy Production Director

A native Washingtonian, John has over 20 years experience in direct mail production including the Smithsonian Institution Press and Time Life Inc. In addition to his duties at MSHC, John is a frequent guest speaker at such venues as the Direct Marketing Association of Washington and the National Postal Forum.

Bill Sather - Controller

Bill Sather graduated Cum Laude with a BS in Accounting from George Mason University. As Controller, Bill manages the accounting department and is responsible for the overall financial operations of MSHC including budgeting, finance, and financial reporting.

Rich Schlackman - Partner

Ask anyone in Washington about Rich Schlackman and you're soon likely to find yourself in the middle of a colorful story involving the choicest wines, the finer points of strategy and various members of the Grateful Dead. They will also mention in that same breath that Rich is the man singularly responsible for reinventing targeted direct mail across America. Rich created a new school for direct mail known as the "California Style," that involved an innovative visual mix of graphics and emotions backed with intensive demographic strategies.

His clients have included Governors such as Janet Napolitano (AZ), Jennifer Granholm (MI) Ted Kulongoski (OR); US Senator Joe Lieberman (CT) and numerous congressional members, state parties and membership organizations.

Rich resides in San Francisco and is a member of the board of the American Association of Political Consultants. He is also well known as a passionate wine connoisseur who serves on the Great Capital Wine Network of San Francisco. The MSHC staff generally stick close to Rich during social events, as he tends to bring a few bottles of his private stock to replace the usual brands of cheap tipple.

Darin Senneff - Senior Interactive Designer

Darin was the very first member of our interactive art department in 2005; his projects have won multiple awards, including Golden Dots, many Pollies, and a Reed Award. As team lead on interactive projects, Darin does design and front-end development for Web sites and landing pages as well as animation and content for banner ads and our innovative flash games. Darin hails from Fulton, Illinois, and earned his bachelor’s in Graphic Design at Ashford University.

Nick Snyder - Studio Manager

A graduate of Florida State University with a degree in Humanities with a concentration on Communications and Film, Nick manages the flow of projects in our busy art and interactive departments. He first acted as a Studio Manager at MSHC during the 2006 election cycle and rejoined our staff full time in the summer of 2009. Nick has worked previously as a creative services manager and in brand planning and project management.

Stephen Solomon - Senior Account Associate

As a Senior Account Associate in our Client Services department, Stephen handles the day-to-day operations of the department and acts as a liaison to the rest of the firm. Stephen, who is originally from Canton, Ohio, earned a BA from Miami University of Ohio and an MA from the Central European University in Budapest Hungary, both in political science. Before joining MSHC, he worked for Laguens Kully Klose, a political media firm based in DC.

JoJo Spiker - Vice President, Interactive Services

JoJo has over 12 years experience in user experience design and design management, working for leading organizations like Viewpoint, Euro RSCG, and the National Geographic Society. He delivered compelling interactive design for clients that include ONE.org, AOL, and Revolution Health. JoJo grew up in Washington and holds a BFA in Electronic Studio from Howard University. He earned a master’s in Design Management, with distinction, from The Pratt Institute.

A native of Virginia Beach, Ken has a BS in History with a Minor in Anthropology from Radford University and a BA in Graphic Design from Marymount University. He is responsible for everything from layout and design to preparing files for print. Ken’s designs have won numerous awards and received national recognition.

Emily Williams - Senior Interactive Account Executive

Since joining us in 2005, Emily has led the strategy and execution of countless successful online initiatives. As the day-to-day client contact, she is involved in every component of our clients’ interactive programs. During the 2008 election cycle, Emily took a leave of absence from MSHC to serve as the online advertising campaign manager for Barack Obama’s successful presidential bid. Emily is a native of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts and holds a BA in Urban Studies from Columbia University.

Melissa Williams - Account Executive

Focusing largely on voter registration, vote by mail, and academic projects, Melissa has been with MSHC since the 2007 cycle. Prior to joining our team, she worked in direct response fundraising for progressive organizations at Craver, Mathews, Smith & Co. She also worked for MoveOn.org and the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts. Melissa holds a bachelor’s degree in Government and Women’s Studies, as well as an MS in International Law and Organizations, both from Harvard University.

JJ Young - Receptionist

A Washington, D.C. native, JJ has been working for Hal Malchow for the last 17 years. As Receptionist, it’s her job to juggle incoming calls, messengers, deliveries and the fax machine while welcoming visitors and employees alike with a smile.
